Friends, this comes from our sisters and brothers at First Presbyterian Church, Andalusia. It is a good opportunity and good way for us to contribute to the ongoing effort to alleviate suffering among those hit by Hurricane Michael. If you are aware of such relationships being formed here in Mobile/Baldwin County, would you let me know – it would be more efficient for us to deliver supplies locally if possible.
Yesterday evening, Cindy Howard called to ask me if our congregation might want to partner with St. Mary’s in providing relief supplies for folks in Panama City, FL. Cindy’s brother is a Methodist minister there. His church was heavily damaged by Hurricane Michael, but is able to be used as a distribution point for supplies.
I told her we would be glad to do what we are able.
Also, if you would like to provide supplies, you may certainly do so. Again, the list of requested supplies is lower in this message.
I spoke with Al Thompson, stated clerk and interim exec for our Presbytery. Al is also a member of the Board of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. PDA representatives are on their way to Florida and have been in south Georgia over the weekend.
PDA typically provides financial assistance in the immediate aftermath of a disaster and sends work teams in to assist with recovery when a community is stabilized. PDA does not consider itself a “first responder” agency. The rationale is once local leaders are able to assess what is needed, our resources can be deployed more effectively and efficiently. It will be a while yet before PDA will have a physical presence in the area.
If you would like to make a contribution to the work of PDA, I would encourage you to make it through First Presbyterian Church. We will forward contributions on to PDA.
As more information becomes available, I will let you know.
